Sun Safe Policy

UV Ratings
Sun protection measures are recommended when the UV Index is 3 (moderate) and above. You can still get burnt on cool or cloudy days – so it is important to look at the UV intensity, not the temperature. June is the only month of the year that there is an average UV rating lower than 3 in this region, therefore hats, clothing and sunscreen as outlined below are required for BOE camps.

Hats
Staff, educators and children are required to wear sun-safe hats that protect their face, neck and ears. Sun-safe hats include:
• bucket hats with a deep crown and brim size of at least 5cm (adults 6cm)
• broad-brimmed hats with a brim size of at least 6cm (adults 7.5cm)
• legionnaire style hats.
Please note: Baseball caps or visors are not sun-safe hats.

Clothing
Staff, educators and children are required to wear sun-safe clothing that covers as much of the skin (especially the shoulders, back and stomach) as possible. This includes wearing:
• loose fitting shirts and dresses with sleeves and collars or covered neckline
• longer style skirts, shorts and trousers.
Please note: Midriff, crop or singlet tops are not sun-safe clothing.

Sunscreen
Staff, educators and children are required to apply at least SPF30+ broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before going on outdoor activities and reapply every 2 hours. Sunscreen is stored in a cool, dry place and the expiry date is monitored.
Sunscreen should be applied systematically as a group so that the group leader can be sure that all students have fully applied.

Role Modelling
Staff and educators are required to act as role models and demonstrate sun-safe behaviour by wearing a sun-safe hat, clothing and sunscreen, and using shade.

Mandatory Application
Students attending camp at Barrington Outdoor Education are provided with a gear list so that they can meet the requirements of this policy.  If a student arrives without the required gear, BOE will supply the gear at hire or purchase cost.  If suitable equipment is not available, arrangements will be made for the student to be collected from the camp.
